Name that fruit/vegetable!

So today we got our delivery today from Boston Organics, which is one of the coolest things I've ever gotten into. It's like the organic produce fairy waives her little wand every week and all of a sudden we're some apples/bananas/oranges/lettuce/kiwi/etc richer.

But I have one question...what exactly is this?

I think it's some sort of squash, but not sure... The description I got of it via email was : "grooved melon-like thing with a hide like a rhino".

Sounds enticing.

And in the, "What I would rather be doing right now category" is Sammy, surrounded by his toys. Is it bad that I want to be reincarnated as a spoiled puppy?

Isn't that an acron squash?

I often wonder what my kitty Bossa Nova did in her past life to come back here so pampered and spoiled. Maybe she and Sammy were pals.

Sammy livin' the good life!! That's the way it should be!!!

Your squash (i think it's a table queen squash) looks great as in HUGE and also as in delish! Wishing you a great time with it.

Nikk, isn't that acorn squash?

Pretty, tasty pumkin/butternut type taste. I like to roast it with maple and cinnamon.

BTW - I'm trying to set up apple picking/a vegan picnic for a bunch of us local bloggers. I started an MSN group that I hope will help us co-ordinate local get-togethers. (link on vegchic)

I love the organic delivery program! Is it really expensive?

I think that's an acorn squash. I roasted some one year at Thanksgiving, and made a soup from the insides and served it inside the shell at the table. (With the topper half off...) it was so pretty and good too!

Sammy is so adorable. I love the collar and bed and toys!! What a good mommy you are!! lol!

I don't have to ask, "isn't that" .... THAT IS an acorn squash. My favorite. I love autumn. I could eat a truckload of these, well it might take me a few months but I do adore them. It was on my top five foods. I enjoy roasting them in the oven, let them cool a little and the sweetness that happens is incredible. Ilike to put a little of my five bean soup in them.

Like the other commenters said, that's an acorn squash. (I just wanted to jump in on the name that squash bandwagon) You can even roast the squash seeds just like you roast pumpkin seeds. Yum! Cute pic of Sammy :)

Thanks for the comment on my blog! It's always nice to meet a fellow vegan baker, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who is mystified by squash varieties...
